Do you work with Microsoft 365 and have you linked your email to SpinOffice via IMAP? From now on, you can also choose to link via Microsoft Graph — the newer method recommended by Microsoft itself for connecting to Microsoft 365. In this article, you will read why we are adding this, what it changes for you, and what you (or your IT administrator) need to arrange to switch over.
Why Microsoft Graph alongside IMAP?
Until now, Microsoft 365 email connections ran via IMAP with OAuth2. That works, but Microsoft limits the number of concurrent IMAP connections per environment — with a growing number of customers, you will eventually run into this issue. Microsoft Graph is the more modern API that Microsoft itself recommends for these types of connections, and it does not have this limitation in the same way.
We have been using Graph internally for some time ourselves and are now offering the connection to our customers as well.
What changes for you?
Nothing is mandatory. IMAP remains available and continues to work as you are used to. If you wish to switch to Graph, you can do so yourself within your Inbox.
We recommend switching eventually, as this is the more stable route recommended by Microsoft — but for now, this is a choice, not a deadline.
What does your IT administrator need?
This is the most important part for those switching: the Graph connection only works fully if your Microsoft 365 tenant administrator has approved the correct permissions (scopes) for SpinOffice within your Microsoft 365 admin center. Without this approval, the connection may function incompletely — for example, receiving email but not sending it, or vice versa.
For a full mail connection, the following are required:
- Mail.ReadWrite Mail.ReadWrite — reading and managing email in the mailbox.
- Mail.Send Mail.Send — sending email on behalf of the mailbox.
If you work with shared mailboxes, the following are also required:
- Mail.Read.Shared
- Mail.Send.Shared
Have you previously set up a Microsoft Graph connection? Then check with your IT administrator whether the above permissions have been approved before you switch (further).
What this does not (yet) include
At this moment, this connection only covers email. Synchronization of calendar and contacts via Microsoft Graph will come in a later phase — a separate message regarding this will follow as soon as it is available. How do you switch?
